その 後(のち)　十日(とおか)　余(あま)り　たってから、　良(りょう)平(へい)は　また　たった　一人(ひとり)、　

昼過(ひるす)ぎの　工事場(こうじば)に　たたずみながら、　トロッコの　来(く)るのを　眺(なが)めて　

いた。

すると　土(つち)を　積(つ)んだ　トロッコの　ほかに、　枕木(まくらぎ)を　積(つ)んだ　トロッコが　一両(いちりょう)、　これは本線(ほんせん)に　なる　はずの、　太(ふと)い　線路(せんろ)を　登(のぼ)って　来(き)た。

この　トロッコを　押(お)して　いるのは、　二人(ふたり)とも　若(わか)い　男(おとこ)だった。

良(りょう)平(へい)は　彼(かれ)らを　見(み)た　時(とき)から、　何(なん)だか　親(した)しみ　易(やす)い　ような　気(き)が　

した。

「この　人(ひと)たちならば　叱(しか)られない」――

彼(かれ)は　そう　思(おも)いながら、トロッコの　そばへ　駆(か)けて　行(い)った。

About ten days had passed.  One afternoon Ryohei sat in the construction site  watching lorries coming.  Among them was the one loaded with sleepers as well as the one loaded with soil.  The former moved up on the thick rails which would be part of the main railway track.  The lorry was pushed by two young men.  Ryohei had felt a friendly feeling toward them since he had seen them.  "They would not scold me" -- so saying to himself, he ran up to the lorry.

「おじさん。　押(お)して　やろうか？」

その　中(なか)の　一人(ひとり)、――縞(しま)の　シャツを　着(き)て　いる　男(おとこ)は、　うつむきに　トロッコを　押(お)したまま、　思(おも)った　通(とお)り　快(こころよ)い　返事(へんじ)を　した。

「おお、押(お)して　くよう」

良平(りょうへい)は　二人(ふたり)の　間(あいだ)に　はいると、　力(ちから)一杯(いっぱい)　押(お)し始(はじ)めた。

「われは　なかなか　力(ちから)が　あるな」

他(た)の　一人(ひとり)、――耳(みみ)に　巻煙草(まきたばこ)を　挟(はさ)んだ　男(おとこ)も、　こう　良(りょう)平(へい)を　褒(ほ)めて　くれた。

"Misters, shall I push it?"
Pushing the lorry with his eyes cast down, one of the two in a striped shirt gave him an expected reply; "Yeah, push it."
 Going between them, Ryohei began to give it a push with all his strength.
 "Ya got power"
 The other man, who had a cigarette behind the ear, praised him.

そのうちに　線路(せんろ)の　勾配(こうばい)は、　だんだん　楽(らく)に　なり始(はじ)めた。

「もう　押(お)さなくとも　よい」――

良平(りょうへい)は　今(いま)にも　言(い)われるかと　内心(ないしん)　気(き)がかりで　ならなかった。

が、　若(わか)い　二人(ふたり)の　土工(どこう)は、　前(まえ)よりも　腰(こし)を　起(お)こしたぎり、　黙黙(もくもく)と　

車(くるま)を　押(お)し続(つづ)けていた。

良平(りょうへい)は　とうとう　こらえ切(き)れずに、　おずおず　こんな　事(こと)を　尋(たず)ねて　

見(み)た。

「いつまでも　押(お)して　いて　いい？」

「いいとも」

二人(ふたり)は　同時(どうじ)に　返事(へんじ)を　した。

良(りょう)平(へい)は　「優(やさ)しい　人(ひと)たちだ」と　思(おも)った。

The gradient of the track became less and less steep as they went.  Ryohei was worried they would say he did not need to push it anymore.  The two young laborers, however,  just kept pushing silently, though bending less forward. 
At last Ryohei couldn't betray his anxiety and asked them hesitantly;
 "Can I keep on pushing as long as I want?"
 "Sure."
 The two men answered at the same time. "Kind folks," Ryohei thought.

五六町余(ごろくちょうあま)り　押(お)し続(つづ)けたら、　線路(せんろ)は　もう　一度(いちど)　急勾配(きゅうこうばい)に　なった。

そこには　両側(りょうがわ)の　みかん畑(ばたけ)に、　黄色(きいろ)い　実(み)が　いくつも　日(ひ)を　受(う)けて　いる。

After pushing about ten meters, the gradient became steep again.  On both sides were mikan orchards, where many yellow fruits were bathed in the sun.

「登(のぼ)り道(みち)の　方(ほう)が　いい、　いつまでも　押(お)させて　くれるから」――

良(りょう)平(へい)は　そんな　事(こと)を　考(かんが)えながら、　全身(ぜんしん)で　トロッコを　押(お)すように　した。

 "An uphill path is better.  I am allowed to push for a long time,"  Thinking this way, Ryohei pushed the lorry with all his might.

みかん畑(ばたけ)の　間(あいだ)を　登(のぼ)りつめると、　急(きゅう)に　線路(せんろ)は　下(くだ)りに　なった。

縞(しま)の　シャツを　着(き)て　いる　男(おとこ)は、　良(りょう)平(へい)に「やい、乗(の)れ」と　言(い)った。

良(りょう)平(へい)は　すぐに　飛(と)び乗(の)った。

トロッコは　三人(さんにん)が　乗(の)り移(うつ)ると　同時(どうじ)に、　みかん畑(ばたけ)の　匂(にお)いを　

あおりながら、　ひたすべりに　線路(せんろ)を　走(はし)り出(だ)した。

「押(お)すよりも　乗(の)る　方(ほう)が　ずっと　いい」

良(りょう)平(へい)は　羽織(はおり)に　風(かぜ)を　はらませながら、　当(あた)り前(まえ)の　事(こと)を　考(かんが)えた。

「行(い)きに　押(お)す　所(ところ)が　多(おお)ければ、　帰(かえ)りに　また　乗(の)る　所(ところ)が　多(おお)い」

そうも　また　考(かんが)えたり　した。

When the lorry went up to the end of the slope through the mikan orchards, the track suddenly went down.  "Get on, kid." The man in the striped shirt said to Ryohei.  He jumped on quickly.  At the same time as the three rode, the lorry began to slide on the track, driving away the scent of the mikan orchard.  "Much better to ride than to push,"  Ryohei came up with the matter-of-factness, with his haori swelled in the wind.

竹(たけ)やぶの　ある　所(ところ)へ　来(く)ると、　トロッコは　静(しず)かに　走(はし)るのを　止(や)めた。

三人(さんにん)は　また　前(まえ)の　ように、　重(おも)い　トロッコを　押(お)し始(はじ)めた。

竹(たけ)やぶは　いつか　雑(ぞう)木林(きばやし)に　なった。

爪先(つまさき)上(あが)りの　所所(ところどころ)には、　赤(あか)さびの　線路(せんろ)も　見(み)えない程(ほど)、　落葉(おちば)の　

たまって　いる　場所(ばしょ)も　あった。

その　道(みち)を　やっと　登(のぼ)り切(き)ったら、　今度(こんど)は　高(たか)い　崖(がけ)の　向(む)こうに、　

広広(ひろびろ)と　薄(うす)ら寒(さむ)い　海(うみ)が開(ひら)けた。

と　同時(どうじ)に　良(りょう)平(へい)の　頭(あたま)には、　余(あま)り　遠(とお)く　来過(きす)ぎた　ことが、　急(きゅう)に

はっきりと　感(かん)じられた。

When it came to the place where bamboo shrubs grew, the lorry made a quiet stop.  The three began to push the heavy lorry again as they had.  The bamboo shrubs became thicket before they knew.   On the gentle uphill slope were some pools of leaves, thick enough to hide the rusty rails.  When they finally finished climbing the slope, they could see,　behind high cliffs,  the ocean spread, vast and chilly. 　At the same time Ryohei was convinced he had come too far.
