小田原(おだわら)　熱海間(あたみかん)に、　軽便鉄道敷設(けいべんてつどうふせつ)の　工事(こうじ)が　始(はじ)まったのは、良平(りょうへい)の　

八(やっ)つの　年(とし)だった。

良(りょう)平(へい)は　毎日(まいにち)　村(むら)外(はず)れへ、　その　工事(こうじ)を　見物(けんぶつ)に　行(い)った。

工事(こうじ)を――と いった　ところが、　ただ　トロッコで　土(つち)を　運搬(うんぱん)する――

それが　面白(おもしろ)さに　見(み)に　行(い)ったので　ある。

It was when Ryohei was eight that the constrution of light railway  bewteen Odawara and Atami began. He would go to the edge of the village to see the construction, or rather transport of soil by lorry, which so fascinated him.

トロッコの　上(うえ)には　土工(どこう)が　二人(ふたり)、　

土(つち)を　積(つ)んだ　後(うし)ろに　たたずんで　いる。

トロッコは　山(やま)を　下(くだ)るの　だから、人手(ひとで)を　借(か)りずに　走(はし)って　来(く)る。

あおるように　車台(しゃだい)が　動(うご)いたり、　土工(どこう)の　半(はん)てんの　すそが　

ひらついたり、　細(ほそ)い　線路(せんろ)が　しなったり――良平(りょうへい)は　そんな　けしきを　眺(なが)めながら、　土工(どこう)に　なりたいと　思(おも)う　ことが　ある。

せめては　一度(いちど)でも　土工(どこう)と　いっしょに、　トロッコへ　乗(の)りたいと　

思(おも)う　ことも　ある。

トロッコは　村外(むらはず)れの　平地(へいち)へ　来(く)ると、　自然(しぜん)と　そこに　止(と)まって　

しまう。

と　同時(どうじ)に　土工(どこう)たちは、　身軽(みがる)に　トロッコを　飛(と)び降(お)りるが　早(はや)いか、　

その　線路(せんろ)の　終点(しゅうてん)へ　車(くるま)の　土(つち)を　ぶちまける。

それから　今度(こんど)は　トロッコを　押(お)し  押(お)し、　もと　来(き)た　山(やま)の　方(ほう)へ　

登(のぼ)り始(はじ)める。

良(りょう)平(へい)は　その　時(とき)　乗(の)れないまでも、押(お)す　ことさえ　できたらと　

思(おも)うので　ある。

On the lorry sat two laborers, behind the soil they had loaded.
The lorry came running down without human power, for it climbed down the mountain.  Seeing the lorry rolling, the laborers' wide sleeves of happi coat flying, and the thin rails giving under the lorry,Ryohei sometimes wished he would be a construction laborer.  Only if he could ride the lorry with them !   Just once would be enough, he thought. The lorry stopped naturally when it came down to the flat ground on the edge of the village. The moment it stood still, the laborers jumped off lightly. And no sooner had they landed than they threw the soil down to the end of the railway. Then again they began to push the lorry up to the mountain they had come from. Ryohei wanted to do the same thing , not minding if he could not ride it.

土工：　(obsolete) = 建設(けんせつ)作業員(さぎょういん)　construction laborer

車台：　(technical) chasis

半てん：　It is very often confused with ‘happi’ coat.  Both are worn by laborers, but hanten is a pure working clothes worn daily while happi is worn once or twice a year on a formal occasion.
