しかし　その　電灯(でんとう)の　光(ひかり)に　照(て)らされた　夕刊(ゆうかん)の　紙面(しめん)を　見渡(みわた)しても、　やはり　私(わたし)の  憂鬱(ゆううつ)を　慰(なぐさ)むべく、　世間(せけん)は　余(あま)りに　平凡(へいぼん)な　出(で)来(き)事(こと)ばかりで　持(も)ち切(き)って　いた。

講和(こうわ)問題(もんだい)、　新婦(しんぷ)新郎(しんろう)、　涜職(とくしょく)事件(じけん)、　死亡(しぼう)広告(こうこく)――私(わたし)は　トンネルへ　入(はい)った　一(いっ)瞬間(しゅんかん)、　汽車(きしゃ)の　走(はし)っている　方向(ほうこう)が　逆(ぎゃく)に　なったような　錯覚(さっかく)を　感(かん)じながら、　それらの　索漠(さくばく)と　した　記事(きじ)から　記事(きじ)へ　ほとんど　機械的(きかいてき)に　眼(め)を　通(とお)した。

が、　その　間(あいだ)も　もちろん　あの　小娘(こむすめ)が、　あたかも　卑俗(ひぞく)な　現実(げんじつ)を　人(にん)間(げん)に　した　ような　面(おも)持(も)ちで、　私(わたし)の　前(まえ)に　坐(すわ)って　いる　ことを　絶(た)えず　意識(いしき)せずには　いられなかった。

この　トンネルの　中(なか)の　汽車(きしゃ)と、　この　田舎者(いなかもの)の　小娘(こむすめ)と、　そうして　また　この　平凡(へいぼん)な　記事(きじ)に　埋(うず)まって　いる　夕刊(ゆうかん)と、――これが　象徴(しょうちょう)で　なくて　何(なん)で　あろう。

不可解(ふかかい)な、　下等(かとう)な、　退屈(たいくつ)な　人生(じんせい)の　象徴(しょうちょう)で　なくて　何(なん)で　あろう。

私(わたし)は　一切(いっさい)が　くだらなく　なって、　読(よ)みかけた　夕刊(ゆうかん)を　放(ほう)り出(だ)すと、　また　窓枠(まどわく)に　頭(あたま)を　もたせながら、　死(し)んだように　眼(め)を　つぶって、　うつらうつら　し始(はじ)めた。

When I looked over the newspaper under the electric light, I found nothing but routine incidents occurring in the world, which were there to console my gloom.

Treaty of Versailles, weddings, bribery, obituary --- I ran my eyes over these dreary articles almost mechanically,  under the illusion that the moment the train entered the tunnel in the opposite direction

However, I could not but be aware of the girl sitting in front of me, personifying the vulgar reality.

This train passing through the tunnel, this bumpkin girl, this evening newspaper filled with routine articles— weren’t they all symbols?   Didn’t they all symbolize obscurity, lowness and boredom of life?

Coming to feel everything was worthless, I threw away the half-read newspaper and closed my eyes as if dead.  I began to doze with my head against the window frame.
