多くの形容詞と副詞は原級， 比較級， 最上級の３つの形があります。
このうち原級は変化のない，基本の形です。
比較級と最上級の作り方は
１ ふつうは比較級は原級＋er ， 最上級は原級＋est
例： tall taller tallest
２ 語尾が e で終わると
比較級は原級＋r ， 最上級は原級＋st
例： nice nicer nicest
３ 語尾が1つの母音字と1つの子音字で終わると 子音字を重ねて
比較級は原級＋er ， 最上級は原級＋est
例： big bigger biggest
中学生なら big と hot(hotter/hottest) を知っていればほぼ十分。
４ 語尾が子音字＋y で終わると y を i にして
比較級は原級＋er ， 最上級は原級＋est
例： happy happier happiest
５ ３音節以上の語と，語尾が -ful, -ed, -ing, -ous,
-ly(early，friendlyなどは除く）などで終わると
比較級は more＋原級， 最上級は most＋原級
（注）上の１〜４と違い，比較級，最上級はそれぞれ2語で表すことになる。
例： interesting more interesting most interesting
６ 不規則なもの
good(well) better best
many(much) more most
基本的には不規則なものはこの２語で十分。
できたら他に次の２語も覚えておいた方がよい。
bad(ill) worse worst
little less least
原級を使う表現
■ as 原級 as 〜 〜と同じくらい...
例： Our school is as old as yours.
私達の学校はあなたの学校と同じくらい古い。
■ not as(so) 原級 as 〜 〜ほど...ではない
例： Japan is not as large as Canada.
日本はカナダほど大きくない。
■ three times as 原級 as 〜 〜の３倍...
２倍なら twice as 原級 as 〜
半分なら half as 原級 as 〜
例： He has three times as many CDs as I do.
彼は私の３倍ＣＤを持っている。
■ as 原級 as possible できるだけ..
as 原級 as 主語 can/could でも同じ意味。
例： He worked as hard as possible(as hard as he could).
彼はできるだけ一生懸命はたらいた。
比較級を使う表現
■ 比較級 than 〜 〜よりも...
例： This building is higher than that one.
この建物はあの建物より高い。
■ much 比較級 ずっと〜
比較級を強める。 very は使えない。
例： This site is much more interesting than that one.
このサイトの方があのサイトよりずっとおもしろい。
■ 比較級 than any other 単数形の名詞 他のどの〜よりも..
例： He is more popular than any other boy in my class.
彼は私のクラスの他のどの少年よりも人気がある。
■ No other 単数形の名詞 is 比較級 than 〜 〜よりも..なのはない
例： No other boy in my class is more popular than he(him).
彼よりも人気のある少年はクラスにいない。
■ the 最上級 of ＋複数形の名詞
the 最上級 of ＋ all
the 最上級 of ＋ the 数字
the 最上級 of ＋ us/them/you
〜の中で一番。。
例： He is the tallest of those boys. 彼はあれらの少年の中で一番背が高い。
He is the tallest of us all. 彼は私達みんなの中で一番背が高い。
He is the tallest of the three 彼は３人の少年の中で一番背が高い。
■ the 最上級 in ＋ 範囲・場所を示す語
例： He is the tallest in his class. 彼はクラスの中で一番背が高い。
（注意） 副詞の最上級は the をつけなくてもよい。
例： He can run (the) fastest in his class. 彼はクラスの中で一番速く走る。
■ 反意語の形容詞を使う書きかえ
This pencil is longer than that one.
このエンピツはあのエンピツより長い。
That pencil is shorter than that one.
あのエンピツはこのエンピツより短い。
■ 原級と比較級の書きかえ
This pencil is longer than that one.
このエンピツはあのエンピツより長い。
That pencil is not as long as this one.
あのエンピツはこのエンピツほど長くない。
This pencil is not as short as that one.
このエンピツはあのエンピツほど短くない。
■ 最上級を比較級と原級で表す書きかえ
Mt.Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan.
富士山は日本で一番高い山だ。
Mt.Fuji is higher than any other mountain in Japan.
富士山は日本のほかのどの山よりも高い。
No other mountain in Japan is higher than Mt.Fuji.
富士山より高い山は他に日本にない。
No other mountain in Japan is as high as Mt.Fuji.
富士山ほど高い山は他に日本にない。
（応用）
Health is the most important thing (of all).
健康が（全ての中で）一番大切なものだ。
Health is more important than anthing else.
健康は他の何よりも大切だ。
Nothing (else) is more important than health.
健康よりも大切なものは（他に）ない。
Nothing (else) is as important as health.
健康ほど大切なものは（他に）ない。
（注意）other ではなく else を使っていることに注意。
